Everybody sweats, but people with hyperhidrosis produce more sweat than necessary to maintain their body temperature. Ordinary daily activities become more difficult. Excessive sweating often limits people in their social and professional life. It could be a warning sign for thyroid problems or diabetes, which would need to be treated first.
What causes excessive sweating?
Abundant sweating is caused by overactive sweat glands, the eccrine glands. These glands are located all over the body, but are concentrated in some areas, such as under the arms.
Factors that can lead to excessive sweating:
Movement
Heat or cold
Alcohol, coffee or tea
Hot or spicy food
Stress, fear and strong emotions
Diabetes, thyroid problems
How to treat hyperhidrosis?
Muscle relaxants (also used for the treatment of wrinkles) are an approved treatment for excessive sweating. Once injected, the innervation of the sweat glands is blocked. Sweat production significantly decreases or stops. This effect lasts for six months.
